You do know that Gandalf was in a tremendous hurry, and needed Theoden like right Now! Narya, his ring, was powerful, no? A little nudge probably. Not to mention Gandalf is Maia.

Basically, the wizard bullied the old man to get what he needed. Quaint story, though.
